Our Game
Walking Rugby is a competitive but non contact, passing game, tackles are made by a two handed touch (not push.) There are no rucks, mauls or line outs and scrums are a simplified passive way of restarting the game. Without the collisions and impacts of traditional rugby it is a game of strategy and tactics, suitable for men and women and most of all it is a great fun way of keeping fit.
Walking Rugby is suitable for older people, both women and men, people recovering from injury or illness. Many of our players have played rugby but this is not essential as our training and matches are planned to give everyone an opportunity.
Games are played in two halves of 7 minutes each way, competitions are usually in Festival format playing several games over an afternoon.
Our Training Programme
We train on Thursdays at Salisbury Rugby Club between 630pm and 7.30pm, although during the winter we may move indoors when suitable facilities are available. We normally start each session with some warm-up and rugby skills, before playing games. Supplementing this we will hold occasional joint training sessions with other Walking Rugby Clubs.
Tuesday mornings are even more relaxed, with us just playing a series of games. The session starts at 10.30am, lasting an hour.
Our Matches
We play a number of evening and Saturday matches throughout the year, and during the summer we intend to play in a number of festivals, including our own that is normally held at the end of April. During the remainder of the year we will play occasional fixtures against other Walking Rugby clubs, normally on a Thursday evening.
Our History
Salisbury Walking Rugby got off the ground in January 2017. Initiated by Pat Clash, we were one of the founding Walking Rugby Clubs in Walking Rugby South West. Salisbury won the very first inter-club games against Bristol in May 2017. Walking Rugby is growing and there are now Clubs across the whole of the South of England and beyond.
Our Home
We are proud to be part of Salisbury Rugby Football Club and are fully integrated with the club and subscribe to the core values of:
