With glorious spring sunshine, music in the air, and a spirit of camaraderie running through the day.
While this year’s event was a little smaller in scale than previous editions, organisers see that as a positive sign—reflecting the growing popularity of Walking Rugby, with clubs now enjoying more local fixtures and festival options throughout the region.
For the uninitiated, Walking Rugby is a fun, inclusive, non-contact version of the game. Played at walking pace, it’s suitable for all ages and abilities, and places an emphasis on teamwork, communication, and enjoyment over competition—though that didn’t stop some impressive play across the day!
Seven teams took part in a single-league format, ensuring plenty of action as each side played six matches. Representing the spirit and diversity of Walking Rugby were Devizes, Salisbury Spitfires, Salisbury Bustards, Wheatsheaf, Gosport & Fareham, Gloucester, and Kingswood.
The festival was played in excellent spirits, soundtracked by a lively ukulele band performing crowd-pleasing hits. The coveted Pat Clash Salver was won by Gosport & Fareham, who topped the standings after a strong showing. Salisbury Bustards were hot on their heels and claimed a well-earned runners-up spot, while the Fair Play Award deservedly went to Devizes for their sportsmanship and positivity throughout the day.
