U12 Spitfires: The SwanFires Light Up BournemouthHistory was made in Bournemouth as girls’ rugby returned to their pitches for the first time in a decade — and our U12 Spitfires were right at the heart of it. With only six players available, the girls joined forces with Swanage to form the brilliantly named SwanFires, and what followed was an outstanding display of teamwork and pure rugby joy.
Despite Bournemouth’s size and power, the SwanFires dazzled with their technical skill: sharp passing, smart support play and relentless work at the breakdown. Inca “Tank”, Olivia and Sienna delivered crunching tackles, Chloe from Swanage threw herself into every defensive battle, and Manaia tore down the wing with soaring runs and superb finishes.
And then came the moment of the day — Robyn’s outrageous dummy that sent a defender searching for the ball somewhere in another postcode. Pure magic.
Two brave, pacey scores from Hester capped off a brilliant performance from a team that had only just met. The SwanFires gelled instantly, encouraged one another, and played with huge smiles.
Most importantly, the day showed exactly what girls’ rugby is all about: friendship, confidence, courage — and the joy of being part of something bigger than yourself.
U14 Spitfires: Heart, Improvement and True Spitfire SpiritWith the brand new U14 league underway, the Spitfires faced a strong Bournemouth side and a steep learning curve — but they attacked the challenge with heart and determination.
The score didn’t go their way, but the performance absolutely did. The improvement from their previous outing was remarkable, especially in defence, where the girls threw themselves into tackles and refused to back down. Sophie earned a special mention for a huge chase back tackle followed by three big hits in a row — a tackling machine in full flow.
The girls played with smiles throughout, showing resilience, bravery and a willingness to learn. These are the qualities rugby builds so naturally in young players — and the U14s are developing them week by week.
U16 Spitfires: Pride in Every MinuteThe U16s travelled to Trojans and faced a tough 65–7 loss, but the score tells only a fraction of the story. With injuries forcing players into unfamiliar positions and newer players stepping up, the Spitfires showed immense determination and togetherness.
Every player gave everything from the first whistle to the last. Their attitude, effort and team spirit were outstanding, and both sides showed superb sportsmanship throughout — a reminder of what youth rugby is truly about.
Rugby teaches resilience better than almost any sport. The U16s embodied that lesson, proving that courage isn’t measured by the scoreboard but by how you respond when things get tough.
U18 Spitfires: A Comeback for the AgesWhat an opening match for the long awaited start of the U18 season. With only 14 players facing a combined squad of 25 from Winchester, Ellingham & Ringwood, and Andover, the Spitfires stepped up with trademark humour, grit and determination.
The first half was a challenge, with the opposition racing to a commanding lead — seven tries to two. But the second half? Pure Spitfire magic.
The girls launched an extraordinary comeback, scoring eight tries to the opposition’s three, fighting for each other right to the final whistle. It wasn’t quite enough to steal the win, but the 66–54 final score reflected a performance full of character, skill and belief.
Player of the Match went to Maisie B, who slotted all but two conversions and set up several tries — a standout performance in a standout game.
This is the kind of rugby that inspires younger players and shows exactly what girls’ rugby can offer: empowerment, excitement, and the confidence to take on challenges head on.
Why Girls Should Give Rugby a TryAcross all four age groups, one message shone through: girls’ rugby builds brilliant young people.
Rugby gives girls:
• Confidence — learning to trust their abilities and their teammates
• Physical strength and fitness — in a sport that welcomes every body type
• Resilience — discovering how to bounce back, adapt and grow
• Friendship and belonging — joining a team that supports and celebrates each other
• Joy — because rugby is fun, fast, muddy, social and unforgettable
Whether you’re bold and fearless, quiet and thoughtful, fast and agile, strong and powerful — or still figuring out who you are — rugby has a place for you.
