Following their impressive victory over the Midlands last weekend, the South West U18 rugby team maintained their unbeaten run with a thrilling 24-24 draw against the North on Sunday, 23 February. In challenging conditions, the North had a late opportunity to snatch the win with a conversion, but the difficult kicking conditions saw the attempt drift wide, ensuring honours were even. A draw was a fair result for both sides after a fiercely contested encounter.
Three players from Salisbury RFC, Will Barnard, Sam Knight, and Malachai Rabuli, were recognised for their contributions and presented with caps for their efforts across the two weekends.
Malachai Rabuli was a standout in defence, playing the majority of the match and consistently making his presence felt with powerful tackles. His relentless work rate and strong carries impacted the match as he repeatedly disrupted the North’s attack and provided momentum.
Will Barnard continued his form from the previous fixture, opening the South West’s scoring with an outstanding individual try. Breaking through the defensive line, Barnard evaded multiple defenders to cross the whitewash. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during the effort and had to be temporarily withdrawn. Barnard returned in the final 20 minutes and played a key role, scoring the try that ensured the South West drew level.
Sam Knight, featuring in the second half due to front row rotation rules, made an immediate impact. His power in the scrum proved vital, with the South West dominating the set-piece exchanges after the break. His defensive contribution was equally notable, as he tirelessly harried the North’s attack.
