Salisbury’s Promotion Push Stalled as Sherborne Secure Bonus-Point Victory

Salisbury Rugby Club saw their promotion ambitions dealt a blow as Sherborne claimed a deserved 24 - 8 victory in a top-of-the-table clash at Castle Road.

Played in perfect spring-like conditions, the contest never truly found its rhythm, but it was the visitors who managed the fragmented encounter more effectively to secure the bonus-point win and strengthen their position at the summit of Counties 1 Tribute Ale Southern South.

Salisbury entered the match third in the table, just two points behind Sherborne, and hopeful of overturning a narrow defeat suffered in the reverse fixture in the autumn. They began brightly, showing early intent, but were unable to sustain pressure as handling errors and a scrum that struggled for consistency disrupted promising passages of play.

Sherborne were also guilty of inaccuracy, particularly at the lineout, yet they appeared the more threatening in midfield. The deadlock was broken after 10 minutes when the visitors’ wing cut through from 30 metres to finish confidently in the corner. The conversion attempt drifted wide, leaving Salisbury trailing 5 - 0.

The first half developed into a scrappy, stop-start affair dominated by a territorial kicking battle. Salisbury’s cause was not helped by injuries to centre Cameron Mould and flanker Will Murley, who were forced off in the eighth and 35th minutes respectively. Despite their industry, the hosts struggled to generate forward momentum or fluency.
A penalty on 39 minutes offered an opportunity to finish the half positively, and fly-half Ollie Bate made no mistake from the tee to reduce the deficit to 5 - 3 at the interval.

Sherborne struck decisively soon after the restart. Stealing lineout possession, they built through a series of controlled phases before forcing their way over for a converted try and a 12 - 3 advantage.

Momentum briefly swung in Salisbury’s favour when Sherborne were reduced to 14 men following a yellow card for a careless tackle. With renewed purpose and improved scrum dominance, the hosts capitalised midway through the half. From an attacking scrum 25 metres out, No. 8 Rob Becher surged down the right before offloading to winger Theo André Browning, who finished to narrow the gap to 12 - 8. This delighted a sizable home crowd but it was short lived.

Any hopes of a sustained comeback were swiftly extinguished. From the restart, Sherborne second row Charlie Gunning charged down a clearance kick and raced in unopposed for his side’s third try, restoring control at 19 - 8.

Chasing the game, Salisbury continued to show urgency but were hampered by slow ruck ball and further lineout errors that surrendered valuable field position. Sherborne, by contrast, managed territory intelligently, pinning the hosts back with sensible kicking.
With 10 minutes remaining, an overthrow at the lineout gifted the visitors midfield possession. The ball was moved quickly and accurately to the flank, resulting in a fourth try that sealed a convincing 24 - 8 victory and the four-try bonus point.

Salisbury remain third in the league standings but face a stern test next week when they travel to league-leaders Walcot.
