... and while the scoreboard didn’t go their way in their opening fixture against Aldershot, the performance was full of promise, grit, and heart.
Several of Salisbury’s players were making their rugby debut after only three or four training sessions, yet they showed commitment and skill that belied their limited experience. The match, played in four quarters, began at a fast and physical pace, with Salisbury tackling hard and defending with discipline.
It was scrum-half Gemma Snell who set the tone early, relentlessly disrupting Aldershot’s possession and winning crucial turnovers. The breakthrough came when Ilona Rolls sliced through the defensive line to score under the posts, with Hayley Gedney adding the conversion. Salisbury’s defence held firm until halftime, with standout moments including a try-saving tackle from Ellie Yarwood and a powerful 20-metre carry from Penny Carr to clear the danger. Salisbury led 7-0 at the break.
In the second half, Aldershot fought back. Despite determined resistance, injuries to Georgie McNeish and Kath Dean disrupted Salisbury’s defensive structure, and Aldershot crossed twice in the corner. A third try followed in the final quarter as fatigue set in, but Salisbury rallied to finish strongly. Final score: Aldershot 15, Salisbury 7. Gemma Snell and Ilona Rolls were named joint players of the match.
The day also marked a milestone for the club — Lillie Marriott became the first player to move directly from Salisbury’s U16 and U18 girls’ teams into senior women’s rugby. Alongside her, former age-grade players Mirren, Ellie, and Anais have returned from university and are making a big impact.
Salisbury RFC expressed their gratitude to MJ Abbott, the women’s team’s main sponsor, for their invaluable support in helping to re-establish and grow the game.
The club is now looking to build on this strong start, and new players of all experience levels are warmly welcomed. Their next match is on 6th September — an open invitation to the community to come along, cheer the team on, and be part of the adventure.
