Salisbury Spitfires welcome Andover

11th. January 2026: Salisbury's women's team, the Spitfires, welcomed Andover to Castle Road

Despite harsh and challenging conditions on a cold, wet afternoon, Salisbury Women RFC kicked off the new year in style with a dominant 30–5 victory over Andover Women RFC. Both teams faced the elements head-on, but it was Salisbury who adapted best, delivering an impressive performance in front of a loyal crowd of supporters.

The opening try set the tone for the game, as winger Alice produced a stunning solo effort, sprinting from the halfway line down the wing while fending off multiple Andover defenders.

The second score came courtesy of scrum-half Niamh, who capitalized on a clever offload from hooker Miren, exploiting a gap in the Andover defense to cross the line.

Salisbury’s third try was a moment of sheer determination from Lydia, who broke through four defenders after a superb jackal and turnover. Lydia continued her outstanding form, adding two more tries to complete a personal hat-trick.

The final Salisbury try was a piece of brilliance from full-back Lucy, who launched an incredible kick from inside her own 22, chased it down past the halfway line, and followed up with two more kicks before grounding the ball in the Andover try zone—a true highlight reel moment.

Andover fought hard and were rewarded late in the game when their hooker Olivia powered over for a consolation try, making the final score 30–5.
Lydia deservedly took home the Player of the Match award for her relentless work rate and three superb tries.

Gemma Snell, Salisbury Women RFC captain, reflected on the game:

Yesterday’s game against Andover Women’s RFC was one to remember — the conditions were absolutely brutal, but both sides dug deep and played with real heart. I’m so proud of our team for pushing hard until the final whistle and showing true determination throughout. Massive respect and thanks to Andover for making the trip, turning up short on numbers, and still giving us such an incredible game. That’s what rugby spirit is all about.

A fantastic start to 2026 for Salisbury Women RFC, who showed resilience and creativity in tough conditions. Huge thanks to the supporters who braved the weather to cheer the team on!
