...but ultimately fell to a 15–5 defeat in cold, misty conditions high up on Lansdown outside Bath.
The gloomy weather contrasted sharply with the intensity of a high-tempo contest between two committed sides. Walcot, who had lost only once all season before the encounter, were pushed hard throughout by a determined Salisbury.
Salisbury began positively and showed clear improvement in an area that had troubled them previously, with their lineout functioning perfectly and providing reliable set-piece ball. After the visitors’ early momentum, they were forced to absorb sustained pressure from the hosts, but committed tackling and aggression at the breakdown kept Walcot at bay.
The breakthrough eventually came on 21 minutes when Salisbury failed to secure a loose ball and Walcot centre Joseph Healy gathered to sprint clear for an unconverted try. Walcot struck again shortly after the restart, running back a Salisbury clearance to score out wide and establish a 10–0 lead.
Salisbury responded impressively. Opting for territory from a penalty, they kicked to the corner and secured clean lineout ball before executing a textbook driving maul, with Mike Adams touching down. The difficult conversion drifted wide in the thickening mist, leaving the score at 10–5 after 29 minutes.
The visitors’ pack grew in confidence as the half progressed. Skipper Bobby Brown carried powerfully in midfield while back-rower Rob Beecher delivered a tireless display, helping Salisbury apply pressure, though Walcot’s defence held firm.
The second half continued at the same relentless pace. Salisbury threatened early after earning a five-metre attacking scrum but were unable to convert the opportunity. Momentum then shifted as Walcot forced consecutive goal-line drop-outs and pinned Salisbury deep in their own half.

The hosts extended their lead on the hour mark, building through several phases before creating space for another unconverted try to make it 15–5. Salisbury refused to relent. Intelligent kicking from Ollie Bate and energetic forward play pushed them back onto the front foot, while scrum-half Jacques Kinnison sparked a late break. However, with two yellow cards and injuries forcing changes, the visitors were unable to turn pressure into points as Walcot closed out the match.
Despite the defeat, this was an impressive Salisbury performance. The result leaves Salisbury fourth in Counties 1 Southern South, behind Devizes, with Sherborne and Walcot leading the title race. Elsewhere for the club, Salisbury II recorded a 90–24 victory over Melksham at Castle Road, while the Under-15s defeated Royal Wootton Bassett 29–7 in the Dorset & Wilts Cup final at North Dorset RFC.
