A Testing Afternoon in Dorset

A Testing Afternoon in Dorset

Joe Cooper19 Oct - 15:51

Salisbury experienced a testing afternoon, going down 36–10 to unbeaten league leaders Swanage & Wareham on Saturday.

In a match that exposed a difference in clinical finishing and the visitors’ spirit in adversity, Swans made the perfect start. Crossing for a try having weathered some early pressure inside the opening four minutes. Salisbury responded promptly when Ollie Bate slotted a penalty on seven minutes after sustained pressure inside the hosts’ 22, trimming the deficit to 5–3.

For much of the half, Salisbury enjoyed the lion’s share of possession and field position, working hard for each other at the breakdown and defending with commitment. However, Swanage’s defensive organisation was impressive. Aggressive tackling and destructive rucking prevented Salisbury from generating the quick ball needed to unlock space out wide.

The hosts’ ability to turn defence into attack proved decisive. Two further tries before the interval, one converted, extended their lead to 17–3 at half-time.

The second half opened with renewed energy from Salisbury. Daniel Griffin made way for George Greasley around the hour mark, adding fresh legs to the forwards, while replacements Mica Garvey-Ortiz and later Knight returned as the visitors rotated their pack. The reshuffle helped Salisbury stabilise the scrum under pressure and retain more structured possession, particularly through Mike Adams and scrum-half Jacques Kinnison, who combined effectively at the base.

Despite sustained defensive resistance, Swanage’s back line continued to threaten. They were supported by a highly effective backrow unit spearheaded by their No8, Paul Gregory. A break and punt through resulted in an unconverted try on 58 minutes and 22 – 3 lead.

Salisbury’s persistence finally paid off in the 70th minute when Michael Adams charged over having gathered a loose ball at a lineout 10 metres from the Swans line. Bate added the conversion to make it 22 – 10 and give the visitors a deserved reward for their efforts. Swans, however, finished strongly and in control, crossing twice more in the last 10 minutes to complete a 36–10 victory.

While the result reflected the league leaders’ attacking edge, Salisbury’s display offered positives. Their set-piece coped under pressure and their fitness and resilience did not falter. The final score line was a little harsh on a side that remained competitive and creative throughout.

Swanage & Wareham’s blend of pace, structure and power underlined their status as promotion contenders. Salisbury, meanwhile, can take encouragement from their attitude and work rate. They now have a short break before returning to action on Saturday 8 November, with an away trip to Sherborne.
