2nd_xv_vs_weymouth_2011-04-30_millerSalisbury 2nd XV comfortably defeated Weymouth 2nd XV in the final of the Dorset & Wiltshire Shield by 50 - 0 on Saturday. Salisbury got off to the best possible start with a well worked try from centre Christian Metson after only 3 minutes, Travis Bartels added the conversion. Salisbury quickly re-grouped and attacked from the restart for full back Sean Thomas to run in the second try and establish a 12 - 0 lead on 6 minutes.  This served to underline Salisbury's superior back play but it wasn't all plain sailing; scrummages where often scrappy affairs with neither side establishing a consistently solid platform throughout. Had this not been the case then Salisbury would have scored significantly more points.

Weymouth were unable to contain Bartels and Metson in midfield. The centre pairing regularly got beyond the first-up defence and provided wing Chris Miller (pictured) and Thomas with space out wide.  Salisbury's forwards were stronger in the loose, Gordon Grant often led the charge and Craig Stocker scored from a text-book driving maul on 20 minutes. Salisbury continued to exploit their pace and strength in midfield throughout the second half and effectively settled the match with a try from Miller in the 50th minute. Bartels added the extras to take the score to 31 - 0.

Only the occasional bout of bad temper marred what was an entertaining game of rugby from both sides. This completes a near perfect season for the 2nd XV with a league and cup double.

Try scorers where Metson (2), Miller (2), Stoker, Thomas and Grant. Bartels added 5 conversions.
