Salisbury overcame promotion rivals Trowbridge at Castle Road on Saturday in a fragmented and occasionally ill-tempered encounter to win 28 - 5, earn their 6th bonus point and move five points clear of second place Corsham.
Salisbury started much the stronger. Pace and a fluent interplay between forwards and backs resulted in a try for centre Simon Smith on 2 minutes. The conversion attempt was charged down but Salisbury were clearly in determined mood. They attacked again soon after the restart, slick handling and outstanding support play enabled flanker James Kay to score the hosts second try in the 7th minute. Trowbridge then regrouped and were able to sustain some pressure. On 13 minutes they kicked for the corner from a penalty and then drove over from the lineout but failed to convert the try.
Salisbury lost their fluency midway through the half. They were under pressure in the scrummage and were unable to secure clean ball. Trowbridge often failed to secure ball from the lineout and lacked pace and skill out wide to really stretch the host's defence. Players frequently expressed their misgivings over the referee's control of the contact situation. All of which contributed to breaking the flow of the game. Despite this, Salisbury managed to raise the tempo towards the end of the half. In the 28th minute centre Terry Gilmour made a clean midfield break, second row Arnie Vyas supported and Smith was able to score his second try. Tom Pottage failed to convert. Pottage converted a penalty in 34th minute and the half concluded at 18 - 3.
Neither side really imposed themselves in the second half. Trowbridge's superior scrummaging was negated by Salisbury's dominance in the lineout. Play remained scrappy throughout and the hosts were more than able to contain anything Trowbridge threw at them. Salisbury's fly half Rory Davis (pictured) showed great composure throughout, always securing the ball regardless of quality and his lengthy clearances did much to relieve pressure. The match was put beyond the visitor's reach when Salisbury were awarded a penalty try from an attacking scrummage in the 59th minute which also resulted in a yellow card for Trowbridge flanker Matt Howard. Only another 3 points were added from a Pottage penalty kick and the match finished at 28 - 5 in Salisbury's favour.
Salisbury are away to bottom-of-the-table Bradford on Avon next Saturday.
