Salisbury travelled to Swindon on Saturday hoping to build some league momentum after a convincing home victory over High Wycombe last week. With the wind at their backs Salisbury got off to the best possible start with a try in the first minute from scrumhalf Andrew Herriott, Rory Davis added the conversion. The visitors appeared confident, they ran fluently and used a favourable wind which enabled them maintain control throughout the half. There were tries for prop Luke Esnouf on 24 minutes and second-row Dave Thorpe in the 40th. Davis added a further conversion and 2 penalties and, with only a single try in response from Swindon, the visitors had established a commanding 25 - 5 half-time lead which they looked set to build on.
Swindon approached the second half with greater commitment and were better organised. This resulted in early momentum and a converted try only 2 minutes into the half. In contrast, the visitors appeared to lose their way and never really looked like regaining their grip. Swindon also took full advantage of the end-to-end wind scoring a converted try on 52 minutes and adding a penalty a few minutes later. Salisbury's cause wasn't helped by a yellow card for No8 Shane Johnstone on 59 minutes whilst defending a narrow 25 - 22 lead. With Salisbury still struggling to find their shape, Swindon eventually overhauled them with a further converted try and a penalty to clinch a narrow 29 - 25 victory.
Salisbury will be eager to regroup and put this disappointment behind when they host Witney at Castle Road next Saturday.
