Salisbury's unbeaten run was extended to four after a 44 - 22 home victory over Bath club Oldfield Old Boys on Saturday. Despite disruption to their backline through injury, Salisbury were able maintain the attacking ambition that has enabled them to accumulate 204 match points so far in Southern Counties South.
Salisbury started positively with a converted penalty for Tom Pottage in the 3rd minute but it was Oldfield that took control in the first quarter. The visitors converted a penalty on 11 minutes after a period of sustained pressure and further pressure enabled Oldfield to take a 10 - 3 lead after a converted try in the 16th minute. Salisbury then re-grouped and began to display the skill and pace the Castle Road faithful have become accustomed to. A converted try from second row Dave Thorpe in the 21st minute was followed a few minutes later by a converted try for back-rower James Kay created by winger Pottage's ability to exploit broken play. Pottage added a second penalty on 32 minutes followed by a converted try 6 minutes later when scrum-half David Tonge cut through the defence to set-up the try and a 25 - 10 halftime lead.
Oldfield started the second half positively with a try from an interception to reduce the deficit to 25 - 15 on 41 minutes. 4 minutes later defensive pressure from Salisbury resulted in an interception try for Thorpe to restore the hosts' 15 point lead. With possession now being shared neither side scored until Salisbury stole the ball at a line-out for Thorpe to score his 3rd try on 61 minutes. Pottage added the conversion and Salisbury were looking comfortable at 37 - 15. Oldfield attacked from the restart and scored a well worked converted try in the 66th minute. The hosts then became a little fragmented in the closing stages and momentum remained with Oldfield. Despite this it was Salisbury that had the last word when the once again they stole Oldfield's line-out ball. Slick handling from Drew White and Thorpe enabled Tonge to add the final converted try.
Salisbury are now 4 points clear of their promotion rivals Trowbridge and travel to league strugglers Marlborough next Saturday.
