1st_xv_vs_high wycombe_davis_2011_09_10Salisbury put the disappointment of last week's away defeat at Cheltenham behind them with an emphatic 49 - 17 home victory over High Wycombe. The hosts started the stronger, playing with urgency and purpose. They were rewarded after only 6 minutes with a penalty from Rory Davis but High Wycombe levelled the scores moments later with a penalty of their own. Salisbury continued to press and a patient build-up was well finished out wide by full back Luke Tunabuna. Davis added the extras to extend the host's lead to 10 - 3 on 10 minutes.

The visitors possessed a strong pack which then began to exert greater influence, a period of Wycombe pressure resulted a converted score on 18 minutes to draw level at 10 - 10. The visitors had found their stride and where testing Salisbury but neither side was able to exert complete control over the game. Salisbury entered the final minutes of the half with a slender 13 - 10 lead thanks to a second penalty from Davis but were then held in their own half as Wycombe intensified their efforts. Strong midfield running with the wind at their backs enabled the visitors to dominate the dying minutes but Salisbury's pack resisted Wycombe's pushover attempt and the score remained unchanged.

Play was fragmented in the opening minutes of the second half. Davis added a third penalty and then a try as he ghosted through Wycombe's defence in the 60th minute. The conversion extended host's lead to 21 - 10. A further converted try from wing Tom Pottage followed almost immediately and, with the score at 30 - 10, ensured that Salisbury gained control over the tiring visitors in the final quarter. There was a further try from Pottage and two from back-rower Josh Green. Wycombe added only single converted score in reply as they struggled to cope with Salisbury's greater mobility and tempo.

The second half performance will do much for Salisbury's confidence. Davis (pictured in possession) fully exploited the conditions with excellent tactical kicking, Arnie Vyas was outstanding in the lineout and the pack held their own against weighty opposition. Next Saturday Salisbury will travel to play Wiltshire rivals Swindon who have won both their opening league matches.
