  Home win: 47 – 7

Salisbury's try scorer and prop, Richard WestSalisbury’s 47 – 7 demolition of Buckingham at Castle Road on Saturday will have done much to restore confidence as they strive to pull themselves clear of the relegation zone.

The hosts started strongly, their forwards eager to take the game to Buckingham from the off. It was clear from the first scrummage that the visitors were in for a torrid afternoon when Salisbury destroyed their front-five. Fly-half Dave Bell was able to capitalise on the resulting pressure by charging a clearance kick down to score the first converted try after only 4 minutes. Salisbury were committed to playing a 15 man game but Buckingham were able to counter with a break against the run play to score their only try of the match and level the score after 12 minutes. Undeterred, the hosts kept the faith and used front-rowers Richard West, Dan Hobbs and Luke Esnouf to make the hard yards. This was fully exploited by Bell, scrumhalf Nigel Thomas and centre Terry Gilmour. But; having dominated possession and position, it wasn’t until the dying minutes of the first half that Salisbury scored again. Fittingly, props West and Esnouf both scored as a result of forward pressure on an ailing Buckingham pack.

The hosts started the second half with a 27 – 7 lead and proceeded to dominate the remainder of the match. Even a sin-binning for wing Chris Patterson within a minute of the restart didn’t appear to limit their ambition. 6 minutes in; Bell ghosted through the visitors defence after another trade mark break from Thomas, to setup flanker Nick Triniman for the try.  Now in total control Salisbury added 3 further trys from Bell, substitute Dave Thorpe and a second for West. Pottage missed only 1 from 7 conversion attempts to bring the tally to 47 – 7.

Despite Buckingham’s lack of power up-front this has to count as one Salisbury’s most complete performances. The front row made large dents in the visitors defence, the back row of Triniman, James Kay and Hamish Morton were energetic in support and the back line displayed ambition. Salisbury face a greater challenge away to Cheltenham next Saturday.
