U15 vs Swanage and Wareham - 3 Oct 10 |
|
In windy and very wet conditions, the opening exchanges were evenly matched as both teams adjusted to their opening matches of the season. Salisbury managed to settle first and the platform the forwards began to set up soon created mismatches of numbers in the back line which were exploited with tries by Luke Lomas and Jacob White. These scores gave Salisbury the confidence to return to their familiar, fast paced, offloading game with support runners always on hand to continue the attacks. This was demonstrated by Salisbury's next try with Tom Oakes running back a Swans kick before offloading to Rory Lorimer who was caught just short of the line only to find Seb Eades in support to cross for the try. A further try by Eades, set up by sublime handling from Rupert Coley, and a try for Coley himself left the halftime score at 29-0 to Salisbury including two superb conversions in the conditions by Jake Bookham.
With instructions to run the ball from anywhere, Salisbury encountered a much more organised and determined Swans side in the second half. With Salisbury starting to neglect numbers in the ruck, Swans began to turnover ball with good counter rucking and started to attack effectively via a solid 10/12 partnership. However, Salisbury continued to put pressure on with four more tries coming from the half. Firstly, Lomas picked up to crash over from a 5m scrum followed by Lorimer streaking down the wing following good handling from a turnover. Lorimer then scored again when Mathew Grinham picked up from another 5m scrum and timed his pass perfectly and the scoring finished with Lomas securing his hat trick when he took a pass cutting back at pace.
Swans were rewarded for their efforts before the final try when sustained pressure led to a number of successive penalties giving the referee no option but to award a penalty try. Something that needs to be cut out in the future but still left a final score of 49-5 and a strong opening performance especially given the conditions.
