Home Colts Match Reports Colts vs Bridport - 17 Oct 10
Colts vs Bridport - 17 Oct 10
The Colts made the trip to Bridport on Sunday afternoon for their third game of the season. The glorious sunshine and perfect rugby conditions brought an exciting game of rugby. Bridport started with clear intention to play a physical game and bully Salisbury of the ball. After a furious five minutes which saw Salisbury on their back foot in their own 22 defending hard they forced their way out and took the game to Bridport. Bridport were a strong side and this made the Scrum a key set piece in the game, the Salisbury pack worked very hard to maintain pressure with the front row of Powell, Bailey-Hobbs and Paffett dominating eventually. Good attacking pressure from Salisbury saw Bridport penalized at a Ruck which Fly Half Marcus Beer converted for the lead. The game moved a phase of Salisbury alternatively attacking well and defending hard as neither side could find a way through. Bridport were penalized again in front of the post and Beer took the points again for a six point lead, this was followed by a good forwards try from Ollie Miller taking the lead to eleven points. Just before half time Bridport were rewarded for their hard work with a converted try which set up an exciting second half.

The second half was much like the first with both sides alternatively attacking and defending well, Bridport’s discipline began to slip and they gave away penalties which Salisbury took advantage of, keeping pressure on Bridport’s line and just failing to score on several occasions. Unfortunately through a handling error Bridport made a break and managed to score a try which gave them a narrow lead of 12:11.

The last twenty minutes became desperate, Salisbury had used all their replacements and the pace of the match was testing their stamina and commitment. These tests were passed as Bridport, despite trying very hard, could not break the Salisbury defence. The strength of the Salisbury pack and pace of the backs paid of with a try from Connor Thomas giving Salisbury the lead by four points and ultimate victory.

Salisbury produced a huge team effort for which they can be proud, their set piece work in scrums and line outs was very good, some of the Rucking was not quite there which Bridport capitalized on at times however the overall performances across the Team were excellent, this is typified by the award of Man of the Match being given to the entire front row powerhouse of Will Powell, Ed Bailey-Hobbs and Jack Paffett. The Colts next fixture is at Home to Swanage and Wareham in the U17s Cup on 24th October.
