Colts Victorious in Semi Final against Dorchester

Salisbury Colts entertained Dorchester on Sunday afternoon in the re-arranged Under 17s Cup Semi Final. Conditions were wet and muddy which had an affect on both Teams performance. From the kick off both sides tried to take charge of the game with Salisbury starting at a fast pace trying to drive Dorchester off the pitch but Dorchester defended well and kept coming back at Salisbury. Neither side could get the upper hand, set pieces were fairly even and the conditions didn’t allow fast open rugby. Salisbury looked the better side and when the game settled down they managed to keep up their attacks and, after several phases of play, the ball went out to the backs who moved the ball quickly wide allowing Tom Hopper to score in the corner, the conversion from Marcus Beer just slipped wide of the posts. This galvanized Dorchester who put Salisbury under pressure from the kick off and they in turn were rewarded with an unconverted try just on the stroke of half time. The Teams went in honours even at 5:5 for the half.

The second half continued much like the first although Dorchester’s frustration started to show and, after a warning from the Referee, they lost a forward to the sin bin with Beer taking three points from the penalty. Salisbury took advantage of the 14 man Dorchester team and after good play from the forwards taking the ball up the backs went wide again for Hopper to get his second, converted by Beer. After that the game settled into an even match with both sides attacking and defending in their turn. Salisbury were unlucky not have a third try when the last pass in another backs move didn’t quite make Hopper’s hand on the wing. With Dorchester back to 15 they threw everything they had left into attacks but Salisbury defended well and at the final whistle went in winner 15:5 after a game played well by both sides in what can best be described as testing conditions. Salisbury now face Wimborne in the Cup Final next Sunday art the neutral ground of North Dorset.

Senior XVs - 13 Nov 10

Salisbury 1st XV have now gone 2 consecutive Saturdays without a game. A home league fixture versus Bridport scheduled for this Saturday was cancelled. Bridport's 1st XV was short of a front row so were unable to contest the game. They were also short of players able to travel. Salisbury have claimed the winning points to bring their tally to 40. They are 6 points clear of promotion rivals Corsham and will travel the north Wiltshire club next Saturday.

Salisbury's 2nd XV travelled to play Bridport with a development team. Both club's had agreed that, given Bridport's front row availability problems, the game could not be fully contested and played a friendly. This was a great opportunity to blood young players who clearly relished the opportunity to play at senior level. They defeated the hosts 29 - 19 with trys for Toby Cross, Pete Emmett, Chris Miller and Rich Gilbert (Capt). Jamie Pleydell-Bouverie and Craig Stocker converted the penalties. The Seconds claimed the league points and are second, 2 points behind leaders Ellingham & Ringwood, in Dorset & Wilts 2 South. The 3rd XV also recorded an impressive win, defeating Bournemouth 4th XV at home by 75 - 5. They are now 4th in Dorset & Wilts 3 South.

COLTS Victorious Over Ivel Barbarians

On Sunday afternoon Salisbury Colts entertained Ivel Barbarians at Castle Road in a close fought Merit Table fixture. The conditions were excellent for rugby with bright sunshine and little wind to spoil things. From the kick off both sides showed clear intent to dominate with Salisbury pressuring the Ivel defence and Ivel responding well. Salisbury’s early pressure was rewarded when Fly Half Marcus Beer picked up a loose ball from a tackle, broke through the Ivel defence to run half the length of the pitch well supported by Jonny Eden-Hamilton who took the off load on the five metre line and scored Salisbury’s first try which Beer converted. The game carried on in much the same way with both teams gaining and loosing the upper hand, set pieces went both ways although Ivel had a slight edge in the scrum at times. Midway through the first half Ivel managed to break through the Salisbury defence punishing a handling error and scored their first try which they failed to convert. Coming up to half time Salisbury forwards were rewarded for their sustained pressure on the Ivel defence when from a ruck number eight Angus Walby crashed nearly through, off loaded to Beer who drove through the Ivel twelve to score under the posts and converted his own try. Salisbury went in leading 14:5.

Salisbury started the second half on the back foot and allowed Ivel to score an unconverted try very quickly. The game then settled into a fairly even, if slightly ill disciplined for Ivel, match which saw Salisbury having to keep up a robust defence and only stringing together a few decent breaks and attacks one of which led to a good forwards try from Alex Mcgoldrick which was converted by Beer. Respite was short lived for Salisbury as Ivel punished some sleepy defence with a well taken break away, thankfully unconverted, try. The last fifteen minutes were played at a frantic pace by both sides both attacking and defending. Salisbury built a wall along their five metre line which Ivel kept trying to break through at one point only a suicide dive by Beer to recover a dropped ball two meters out prevented an Ivel try. At the final whistle Salisbury had won a hard contested match 21:17 which is best summed up by saying both teams played very well and in good spirit in a game that literally went down to the last play. Man of the match was Marcus Beer. Salisbury Colts are at home on Sunday 14th November in the U17 Cup Semi Final against Dorchester.

1st XV vs Bradford-on-Avon - 30 Oct 10

1st_xv_vs_bradford_oa_2010_10_30_morganSalisbury travelled to Bradford on Avon on Saturday and extended their unbeaten run to seven league wins with a thumping 97 - 0 win over the lowest placed club in Southern Counties South. Salisbury notched-up 15 trys in all which has contributed to a massive season's points difference of 355.

Despite the score line, the visitors didn't have it all their own way. Bradford got stuck into Salisbury from the start and kept them on the back-foot during the opening exchanges. It took an impressive individual effort from prop George Morgan (pictured) on 6 minutes to settle the visitors down. Morgan scooped up a loose ball and sprinted the remaining 40 metres to touch down, Tom Pottage added the extras. On 16 minutes flanker Dave Salomon broke and shipped the ball for wing Pottage to add Salisbury's second try. With the score at 12 - 0, Salisbury were beginning to look more comfortable. Further trys followed for skipper Liam Gilbert, Phil Carr and Pottage (2) which included Pottage's brilliant effort in which he evaded 3 tackles before chipping ahead and winning the chase for the touch down. The half concluded with Salisbury firmly in control and leading 36 - 0. Bradford were unable to compete during the second half as Salisbury added a further 61 unanswered points. Second half trys were scored by Simon Smith, Luke Esnouf, David Tonge (2), James Kay (2), Dave Thorpe (2) and Phil Carr.

Salisbury will take a break from league action next Saturday but host Bridport on 13th November and travel to second-place Corsham on 20th November. Despite being 5 points behind Salisbury, Corsham have recently recorded some impressive wins. They have a strong pack and pose a real threat to Salisbury's unbeaten record and promotion ambitions.

Team : Richard Roe, Phil Carr, Simon Smith, Nick Taylor, Tom Pottage, Rory Davis, David Tonge, Richard West, Luke Esnouf, George Morgan, David Thorpe, Tom Ranaboldo, Dave Salomon, James Kay, Liam Gilbert (capt). Subs: Phil Sutton, Dave Morrell and Andy Harriott

1st XV vs Trowbridge - 23 Oct 10
1st_xv_vs_trowbridge_2010_10_23_davisSalisbury overcame promotion rivals Trowbridge at Castle Road on Saturday in a fragmented and occasionally ill-tempered encounter to win 28 - 5, earn their 6th bonus point and move five points clear of second place Corsham.

Salisbury started much the stronger. Pace and a fluent interplay between forwards and backs resulted in a try for centre Simon Smith on 2 minutes. The conversion attempt was charged down but Salisbury were clearly in determined mood. They attacked again soon after the restart, slick handling and outstanding support play enabled flanker James Kay to score the hosts second try in the 7th minute. Trowbridge then regrouped and were able to sustain some pressure. On 13 minutes they kicked for the corner from a penalty and then drove over from the lineout but failed to convert the try.

Salisbury lost their fluency midway through the half. They were under pressure in the scrummage and were unable to secure clean ball. Trowbridge often failed to secure ball from the lineout and lacked pace and skill out wide to really stretch the host's defence. Players frequently expressed their misgivings over the referee's control of the contact situation. All of which contributed to breaking the flow of the game. Despite this, Salisbury managed to raise the tempo towards the end of the half. In the 28th minute centre Terry Gilmour made a clean midfield break, second row Arnie Vyas supported and Smith was able to score his second try. Tom Pottage failed to convert. Pottage converted a penalty in 34th minute and the half concluded at 18 - 3.

Neither side really imposed themselves in the second half. Trowbridge's superior scrummaging was negated by Salisbury's dominance in the lineout. Play remained scrappy throughout and the hosts were more than able to contain anything Trowbridge threw at them. Salisbury's fly half Rory Davis (pictured) showed great composure throughout, always securing the ball regardless of quality and his lengthy clearances did much to relieve pressure. The match was put beyond the visitor's reach when Salisbury were awarded a penalty try from an attacking scrummage in the 59th minute which also resulted in a yellow card for Trowbridge flanker Matt Howard. Only another 3 points were added from a Pottage penalty kick and the match finished at 28 - 5 in Salisbury's favour.

Salisbury are away to bottom-of-the-table Bradford on Avon next Saturday.

Team: Richard Roe, Tom Pottage, Simon Smith, Terry Gilmour, Andrew White, Rory Davis, David Tonge, George Morgan, Luke Esnouf, Richard West, Dave Thorpe, Arnie Ayas, Dave Salomon, James Kay, Liam Gilbert (Capt). Subs: Phil Ball, Hamish Morton and Andy Herriott.

Salisbury Mini Festival

17 October2010

U12 Match Report

The U12 squad arrived at the Hallowed ground that is the first XV pitch of Salisbury Rugby Club, for what would be their last ever run out at our home club Mini Festival.
A bright morning, a helicopter arriving and a palpable air of excitement, would bode well for our team, who would have a tough day ahead of them and who needed all the guidance and direction of their coaches they could absorb, if they were to pull off their 6th consecutive win at Salisbury Festival.

1st XV vs Swindon - 16 Oct 10

1st_xv_vs_swindon_2010_10_16_carrSalisbury took a break from league action on Saturday and travelled to Swindon in the first round of the Dorset & Wiltshire Vase. Swindon provided the strongest challenge so far this season and put the hosts under considerable pressure in the closing stages.

Salisbury started the stronger and moved the ball wide on 17 minutes for wing Drew White to score. Swindon responded almost immediately with a superb solo effort from fly half Adam Westall to score a try from 30 metres. He added the conversion to give the hosts a 7 - 5 lead on 22 minutes. Matters got worse for Salisbury as second row Dave Thorpe was yellow carded. The visitors held their composure, Tom Pottage restored the lead with a penalty on 34 minutes and the ubiquitous flanker James Kay extended Salisbury's lead with a try in the 36th minute. Pottage added the conversion and Salisbury finished the half 15 - 7 up.

The visitors started the second half brightly, trys for skipper Liam Gilbert and Thorpe were both converted by Pottage to stretch Salisbury's lead to 29 - 7 inside 46 minutes. Forward pressure led by Gilbert and prop George Morgan resulted in a 5 metre attacking scrum and a try for Pottage. Swindon trailed by 27 points entering the final quarter but sustained pressure enabled them to take control. Pottage was yellow carded and with Salisbury on the back-foot the hosts ran in two converted scores but it wasn't enough, the match concluded at 34 - 21 in favour of the visitors.

Salisbury remain unbeaten in the league and cup competitions and will face promotion rivals Trowbridge at home next Saturday.
